A Study of the Pyrolysis Products of Kraft Lignin

In order to valorize lignin wastes produce useful aromatic compounds, the thermal degradation pyrolysis of Kraft in absence catalysts has been investigated at 350, 450, and 550 °C. The high content sulfur fresh sample led formation S-containing compounds products whose evolution gas phase was monitored through GC-MS analysis. Pyrolytic is rich CH4, CO, CO2, H2S with presence other smaller amounts (i.e., CH3SH, CH3-S-CH3, SO2, COS, CS2). Biochar morphology elemental composition have by means SEM EDX. carbon reaches ~90% after °C, while oxygen showed a decreasing trend increasing temperature. From analysis, bio-oil resulted alkyl-alkoxy phenols, together (alkyl)dihydroxy benzenes minor hydrocarbons compounds. NaOH/H2O EtOH/H2O extraction were performed aim extracting phenolic-like Sodium hydroxide solution allowed better but still incomplete phenolic leaving richer sulfur.
